    Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],

    In the Arabic language, most nouns and all verbs come from 3 letters roots. there are hundreds of these roots. when you want to look up a noun in an Arabic dictionary, you usually need to look for the root, not the word itself. once you find it, you will find aaaall the words deriving from it.
    The word إسلام ISLAM* (or الإسلام AL-ISLAM) is an Arabic noun coming from the verb أسلم ASLAMA, which in its turn comes from the root سلم s.l.m.
    ISLAM means Surrender, Submission, Obedience to Allah, the one true God, creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of the Universe. ISLAM also implies Sincerity in following the path or The God.
    from the same root, we also have the word سلام SALAAM, which means peace. it's used in Muslim greeting: "AsSALAAMu Alaikum".

    * put in mind that the word ISLAM doesn't have any equivalent in any other language. it can't be translated. that's why ISLAM is always called withe the Arabic word ISLAM in all languages.

    Islam is not a new religion that was founded in Arabia in the seventh century like many people think. because "submission to the will of the God" (i.e. Islam), has always been the path to the God. Islam is the same eternal message revealed through the ages to all of the God's prophets and messengers. Muslims believe that all of God's prophets, which include Abraham, Noah, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus and Mohammed -peace be upon them all-, brought the same message of Pure Monotheism. For this reason, the Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- was not the founder of a new religion, as many people mistakenly think, but he was the Final Prophet of Islam. By revealing His final message to Mohammed -peace be upon him-, which is an eternal and universal message for all of mankind, the God finally fulfilled the covenant that He made with Abraham -peace be upon him-, who was one of the earliest and greatest prophets. Suffice it to say that the way of Islam is the same as the way of the prophet Abraham -peace be upon him-, because both the Bible and the Qur'an portray Abraham -peace be upon him- as a towering example of someone who submitted himself completely to the God and worshipped Him without intermediaries.

    The word ISLAM does not represent a one-sided relationship, where the believer is enslaved to a tyrant master like some non-Muslims want to believe. Rather, the word ISLAM indicates a covenant between The Merciful God and his followers, where the Muslim surrenders his or her will to The God in return for peace or safety in this world and salvation and reward in the hereafter.

    In the English language, in order to get the noun for the doer of the action, you add -er in the end of the infinitive verb. for example:
    travel > traveler
    teach > teacher
    in the Arabic language, you add mu- (the letter meem م) to the beginning of the verb.
    for example:
    سافر saafara (to travel) > مسافر musaafir (traveler)
    علّم'allama (to teach) > معلّم mu'allim (teacher)
    أسلم Aslama (to submit to the God) > مسلم muslim (Islamer, lol)

    Many non-Muslims misunderstand the real meaning of the word Islam and Muslim. they think that a Muslim is a person who follows the prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him-. this is wrong. A MUSLIM, in fact, is the person who follows Islam. which means a person who submits himself or herself to the will of the God. anyone who does so is automatically a Muslim. even if he had never heard of the prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- and never read the Qur'an. If a man living in a far away island in the Pacific Ocean finds the God through reason and common sense, and submits to him to the best of his ability and understanding, he is called a Muslim, even if he never prayed, fasted or did pilgrimage to Mekkah. the fact that he recognized that Allah*, the God is his creator and the only God worthy of worship makes him a Muslim.
    People who lived long ago in the time of Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and the other prophets of old -peace be upon them all- and followed them, these people are also called Muslims.

    If you follow the true path of The God and submit to him and worship him alone with no partners, then you are a MUSLIM. eso!

    WHAT IS ISLAM:
    The Arabic word إسلام ISLAM has a two-fold meaning: peace, and submission to the God (If you say "Islam means -peace- " and stop, then that's wrong. If you say "Islam means -submission- " and stop, then that's wrong).
    This submission to the God requires a fully conscious and willing effort to submit to the one Almighty God. One must consciously and conscientiously give oneself to the service of Allah. This means to act on what Allah enjoins all of us to do (in his revelation, the Qur'an) and what His final Prophet and messenger, Mohammed -peace be upon him- encouraged us to do.

    Once we humble ourselves, rid ourselves of our egoism and submit totally to Allah, and to Him exclusively, in faith and in action, we will surely feel peace in our hearts. Establishing peace in our hearts will bring about peace in our external conduct as well.

    PILLARS OF ISLAM AND ARTICLES OF FAITH:
    Islam is careful to remind us that it is not a religion to be paid mere lip service; rather it is an all-encompassing way of life that must be practiced continuously for it to be Islam.

    The Muslim must practice the five pillars of the religion:
    1- testimony of Faith or belief in the Oneness of the God and the finality of the prophethood of Mohammed -peace be upon him-;
    2- Establishment of the daily prayers;
    3- Self-purification through fasting;
    4- Concern for and almsgiving to the needy; and
    5- The pilgrimage to Makkah (situated in Saudi Arabia) for those who are able.

    Muslims believe in the six articles of faith:
    1- belief in God,
    There is One God, Supreme and Eternal, Creator and Provider, Who is Merciful and Compassionate. God has neither father nor mother, and no sons or daughters. God has never fathered anyone, nor was He fathered. God has no equals. He is God of all humankind, not of a special tribe, race, or group of people. He is the God of all races and colours, of believers and unbelievers alike. God is Mighty and Supreme, yet is also very near to pious, thoughtful believers, answering their prayers and helping them. God asks us to know Him, to love Him, and to follow His Law, for our own benefit and salvation.
    2- the prophets,
    All Messengers and Prophets of God such as Noah, Abraham, Lot, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus and Mohammed -peace be upon them all- were mortal human beings endowed with Divine Revelations and appointed by God to teach humankind how to submit to His will and obey His Laws.
    3- the Holy Books,
    Muslims believe in the Revelations sent by Almighty God to His Prophets and Messengers including the Qur'an of prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him-, the original Torah of prophet Moses -peace be upon him-, the original Gospel of prophet Jesus -peace be upon him-, the Scrolls of prophet Abraham -peace be upon him- and the original Psalms of prophet David -peace be upon him-.
    4- the angels,
    Angels are pure and spiritually obedient beings, created by God to fulfill His commands and worship Him tirelessly.
    5- the Day of Judgment
    After the world ends, Muslims believe that all people who have died will be brought back to life (or, resurrected) in order to face the Judgment rendered to each of them by Almighty God. Muslims believe in an appointed Day of Judgment and in Heaven and Hell.
    6- God's decree, whether for good or ill.
    Muslims believe that Almighty God has knowledge of, and control over, everything that exists in all time and space.

    -A WHOLE WAY OF LIFE:
    There are other injunctions and commandments which concern virtually all facets of one's personal, family and civic life. These include such matters as diet, clothing, personal hygiene, interpersonal relations, business ethics, responsibilities towards parents, spouse and children, marriage, divorce and inheritance, civil and criminal law, fighting in defense of Islam, relations with non-Muslims, and so much more. that's why Islam is more than just a religion, it's a whole way of life. and this is what makes Islam different from all other religions.
